How is everyone today? The storm we went through last week, well, it's left a lot of people feeling out of sorts. It's thrown a monkey wrench into everyone's routines, and a lot of people ended up stuck inside. Being stuck inside can really make you feel anxious and depressed, as well as just being cold winter months!

This week, I want to talk about how exercise is really the best medicine for Anxiety, Depression and being Mentally tired!

When your anxious and depressed or tired, one of the last things you want to think about is exercise...right? Some people are prone to anxiety and depression as it is, but there is hope, and there is relief, and it's called exercise, and with a little motivation, you can start feeling better in a short period of time.

1 in 5 people in the United States suffers from some kind of depression or anxiety disorder. We treat it with medication for the most part, which in many cases is needed..so don't stop if you've been diagnosed with anxiety, depression or even bi polar disorder. The facts are clear, and starting an exercise regiment is one of the best things you can do for yourself. I know, when I'm depressed or anxious, the best thing for me to do is to hit the gym. I've had clients who will certainly back this up, as they train with me because it makes them feel much better, and in some cases claim they haven't been depressed or anxious in months. You can't beat that...and it makes my job so much more rewarding as well.

How Can It Help? And Why do you Need to Start Right Away?

  • Releasing feel-good brain chemicals that may ease depression (neurotransmitters and endorphins)
  • Reducing immune system chemicals that can worsen depression
  • Increasing body temperature, which has calming effects

Exercise has many psychological and emotional benefits too. It can help you:

  • Gain confidence.
  • Meeting exercise goals or challenges, even small ones, can boost your self-confidence.
  • Getting in shape can also make you feel better about your appearance.
  • Take your mind off worries. Exercise is a distraction that can get you away from the cycle of negative thoughts that feed anxiety and depression.
  • Get more social interaction. Exercise may give you the chance to meet or socialize with others. Just exchanging a friendly smile or greeting as you walk around your neighborhood can help your mood.
  • Cope in a healthy way. Doing something positive to manage anxiety or depression is a healthy coping strategy.
  • Trying to feel better by drinking alcohol, dwelling on how badly you feel, or hoping anxiety or depression will go away on its own can lead to worsening symptoms.

Starting is probably the hardest part. That lack of motivation that comes from being anxious or depressed or mentally fatigued is an exercise crusher. Let me ask you this. Would you take time to go to the doctor, run to get your prescription, deal with side effects, and in many cases go from medication to medication?

Which seems like the best alternative? You don't have to feel out of sorts or overwhelmed. In just a few weeks you'll notice your feeling better about things, being able to handle tough decisions and problems without that feeling that the world is crumbling around you. At the very least, you'll just simply feel better and look forward to your workouts.
